By now I’m sure you know that Doniphan County is following a mask resolution that requires people in public buildings and gatherings to wear a face mask where social distancing cannot be maintained. These public places also include all USD 114 properties including bus routes. When we return to school Monday November 30th, USD 114 will follow this mask resolution as well. Staff will provide masks to those who may need one. Additionally, school staff will work to see that mask breaks are taken frequently for both students and staff. Thank you for your cooperation. Together, as Cyclones, we can see each other through this hardship. #Cyclonefamily

Dear Primary Parents and Guardians,
We currently have six staff members in the Primary building that are out of school because of COVID related issues. We do not have enough substitutes and staff to cover these classes and need to give these teachers time to recover and get back to school. So, at this time we have decided that it would be in the best interest of our students, staff and community for the Primary building to close for the entire week of November 23rd - 27th. This will allow a longer Thanksgiving break and give everyone a chance to rest and get well. Grades 3-12 will still be in session on Monday and Tuesday per school calendar.
We recognize that this is an extremely stressful time for everyone and regret any hardships this will cause some of our families. At this time, we believe that it is the right step to take for the health of our kids, families, employees and community.

Riverside Schools Food and Supplies Drive
The Riverside High School chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) held a non-perishable food and personal hygiene items drive the last 2 weeks. It was held as a competition between classes in the primary and high school to help restock the school pantry and provide much needed assistance to the Riverside community. The event was a great success with over 1000 items being collected by the students and staff. Ms. Phillips' class in the primary and the high school freshman class won the competition each receiving a reward for doing so. More important than the reward though was the ability to help those in need in the Riverside family especially at this time of year.
If anyone in the community would like to help continue with this drive, please feel free to drop off non-perishable food items as well as personal hygiene items at the high school with Mr. Cera or the primary with Mrs. Cline.

There will be a Middle School Wrestling Quad on Monday, November 23rd starting at 4:00 p.m. Attendance will be limited. Details regarding attendance will be released as we receive them.

There will be a High School Boys Basketball Parent Meeting from 5pm-5:30pm on Wednesday, November 18th in the main Elwood gym.

Middle School wrestling practice will be held at the West Campus until further notice. They will be bussed over on the regular after school bus routes but will need to be picked up after practice.

The Middle School girls basketball game vs. Hiawatha scheduled for November 23rd has been postponed.

The Middle School Wrestling meet at Silver Lake on Tuesday, November 17 has been cancelled.

Veterans Day Parade at Riverside Primary! Theresa Rohrer brought veterans from Corby Place Senior Living to a drive through parade outside the primary building so students could honor our veterans. The first grade students usually go to Corby Place on Veterans Day and put on a program but because of the pandemic were unable to this year. We want to thank all of the many veterans in our community for defending our country and our freedoms. Please remember to thank a veteran today.

Riverside High School would like to thank all of our Veterans! We are forever thankful for the freedoms we have due to your sacrifices you have made for us. Friday, we will have a short presentation from our students in honor of your service. Good morning fellow Cyclones,
I wanted to provide the district with a COVID information update today. Late yesterday afternoon, we received word for the need to quarantine our kitchen staff from the West campus for the next few days due to a positive case exposure. Affected staff are in quarantine as protocol requires. Through creative thinking and efforts from the great network of Riverside family and friends, we were able to open school this morning with no disruption of services or meals missed. Thanks to our USD 114 food service staff, Robyn Baird and Charity Brooke, Pastor Johnny Williams and others from the Baptist Church for efforts in coordinating assistance for the kitchen these next few days. The Riverside family is a generous and giving community. Truly, it will take all of us to help see this year through. Thank you for supporting our schools in these tough times. Together, we can work through these issues.
Travis Githens
USD 114 Superintendent

Hayden Daugherty competed representing RHS at the class 2A regional race at Pierson Park in Kansas City Saturday. It was one of the toughest courses we've seen and coupled with the near freezing temperatures, it made for a tough day with less than optimal times. Hayden still persevered and ran over the series of hill after hill, sides of hills and sharp turns to run 22:32 for the 5k course. He placed 34th. It was a good end for what's been a tough season his junior year. Now it's time to get in a couple weeks of rest prior to starting mileage conditioning for track.

Good afternoon Cyclone families. This morning, we received news from Doniphan County Health Department that one student in kindergarten tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. Through contact tracing, only a select number of students were affected by the exposure in that section. Those families have been notified. No bus routes or other classes have been affected or asked to quarantine and are cleared for school as usual. This is the only known positive student case in our district at this time. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Riverside Primary School or the USD 114 district office.

The JV Football game next Monday, October 19th at Nemaha Central has been cancelled.

Hayden Daugherty competed at the Sabetha Invitational Thursday on a fast course with some great competition from around the state. In the varsity race he knocked a minute off of his season best running 21:35 for the 5k course at Sabetha Country Club. He's recovering from his calf injury slowly but surely and we look for continued improvements over the next couple weeks heading into regionals.

Due to lack of numbers, we are postponing tonight's volleyball game vs. Jeff West to next Tuesday, 10/20 at 5:00 p.m.

Parents - Because of COVID-19, Fall Parent Teacher Conferences will be held in a virtual format. The window for these virtual conferences is October 12th – October 23rd. The Riverside members of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) have joined with the SAFE (Seatbelts Are For Everyone) program again this year to promote seatbelt use among their peers and in the communities. This is part of the Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office's education outreach to save lives on Kansas highways. Our students participate in the program by conducting seat belt use surveys, educating the K-6 students in various ways, bringing speakers in and any other opportunities we can do throughout the year. In the past this has been assisted by the local sheriff and police departments as well as the KHP and Ms. Kansas representatives. We are thankful to have again received a grant through KTSRO and have some great activities planned again this year.

Riverside XC athlete Hayden Daugherty competed at the Perry Lecompton Invitational at Wild Horse Trails near Perry Lake Thursday. It was a beautiful day to run on one of the most true and tough XC courses that we get to compete at. Due to covid regulations, the race was broken into 8 races of 5 teams each between the girls and guys and Hayden got in with some good competition. He ran well and we were glad to see that he had no issues with the injury he's been fighting which is great for the future of his season. We head to Sabetha next week which is always a great meet to run fast times on.

ALL Kansas Students can receive a free breakfast and lunch each school day through December 2020 ensuring they are fueled and ready to learn!

High school students at Riverside are spending time educating elementary students on the importance of proper handwashing. Several students in Mr. Cera's who have taken or are currently in health science classes are using the guidelines set forth by the CDC and some special simulated germs hand lotion to emphasize proper handwashing technique and habits to the K-2 students. It benefits everyone and we're always glad to come down to the elementary to help reinforce things like this.

Due to Hiawatha School District #415 going fully remote starting tomorrow they have cancelled all of their activities. The Middle School football and volleyball games scheduled for tomorrow, September 24 against Hiawatha have been cancelled.

Hayden Daugherty competed in the Kimbel Invitational Thursday hosted by Benton HS at Rosecrans. In spite of a nagging calf injury he ran pretty well, nearly tying his best effort and earning a medal for the season on a pretty rugged course. There was some great competition to push him, including teams from Central HS and Savannah, Mo.
Looking forward to getting healed up now with a 10 day break before heading down to Perry Lecompton for his next race.

Riverside XC Competes at Hiawatha Invite
Hayden Daugherty competed Thursday at the Hiawatha Invitational for cross country. It was a great day to run on a very competitive course. Still in the process of overcoming a calf injury, Hayden Daugherty improved over 30 seconds from the week before to run 22:25 on the 5k course. It's great to see how he keeps a great attitude and continues to work hard, we're looking forward to being free from this injury and seeing how well he can really run this year!

RHS Cross Country participation at the Hiawatha Cross Country meet tomorrow, Thursday, September 17th, will be live streamed by RainbowLIVE. They are offering access to everyone at the following site: www.rainbowtel.net/live If you are not a Rainbow customer, follow the directions for free access at the bottom of the page.

Last night Hiawatha’s board of education decided not to use a ticket system for football. They are no longer limiting attendance to football games, however, they ARE REQUIRING MASKS be worn at all times in the stadium.
Thanks for your flexibility.

Hayden Daugherty competed in his first meet of the season at the Baker Creek Reservoir in Holton Thursday. It was his first meet in almost a year and with that he did pretty well running just under 23 minutes on the new course. There were about 75 athletes in the last event of the night, the boys varsity run. We’re looking forward to continued improvement and just thankful for the ability to get back out there and compete!

Fellow Cyclones – An update as to our start of school.
Today the State Board of Education met as required by recent Kansas state statute to review COVID related education executive orders. In their meeting the board voted down the motion to uphold the Governor’s order delaying the start of schools until after Labor Day.
That vote keeps us on a path to opening schools on our original start date of August 20th 2020. This date was approved by the USD 114 board of education at their regular meeting back in March. USD 114 is committed to continue our planning process for the start of school and have our schools open in a safe manner for both students and staff alike. Our task to plan for the start of school continues and rest assured, we will continue to do that regardless of the date. As I mentioned last week, we will ask for a bit of survey data from our families and staff so we can make the most informed decisions possible. Please find the family survey link in all our regular district communication methods and at the bottom of this message. I thank you in advance for your feedback. It will help our planning efforts to make the most informed decisions to start school.
Because of the number of abnormal situations this pandemic creates across the state, news and information often changes quickly and without much notice. Additionally, situations that may be happening in a certain part of the state, may not necessarily be happening closer to home. I thank you all for your continued patience and support as we work in our planning for the start of the fall term. USD 114 will remain steadfast in helping make the best decisions possible for the good of our kids and staff.
The survey link is as follows:

Greetings Riverside family, this is Mr. Githens with an important announcement. This afternoon, during the governor's press conference, it was announced that K-12 schools in Kansas would not open until after the Labor Day holiday. We will make use of this extra time to plan and make the most of this situation. The delay in opening school will give Riverside more time to prepare for this unusual school year but it calls into question so many other things about what we already have on our calendars. It will take some time to sort through the implications of this order. We expect full details when the Governor’s formal executive order is released Monday July 20th, 2020. We also expect announcements from the Kansas State Activities Association for further guidance later as well. This is a difficult and challenging time. We stand committed to providing the best education possible while accounting for student and staff health and safety. Stay tuned for more details on how school will operate this fall.
We can only start school when conditions allow us to do so. We are as anxious to have kids back in our building as you are. It is more than just what we do, it is who we are as cyclones. Rest assured, we miss our students!
Thank you for your continued support of Riverside Schools.

Reminder! Tomorrow is Second Harvest Fresh Mobile Food Bank Pick up in Blair at 10am while supplies last.

Summer conditioning for ANY of our 7th and 8th graders this season will begin on Monday, June 8th from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the East Campus football field/track. We will do this each week Monday through Thursday at the same time each day. The participants will need to bring their own water/sports drink as the building will not be accessible at this time. If they need to use the restroom, I will make sure they get to one. For at least the first three weeks, we will be staying outside to do our activities and practicing social distancing. I do ask that if your student is not feeling well, do not send them. This is not mandatory so they will not be punished for not making it for feeling bad. I would like them to bring a backpack with an extra pair of shoes and a hoodie in it. We will use this in some of our activities as "extra weight". If the student would like to add a few other items, I have no problem with that. Cancellations of these sessions would occur if inclement weather is called for between the 6:30 to 8:30 time frame. I will open the gate between the two buildings for everyone to enter through. If you are the pick-up person, please be on time maybe even a tad early. I have tried not to miss something, but you may contact me through my email drkeller@cyclones114.org with any questions. Thank you, Mr. Keller.

Riverside Senior Kaitlyn Geeting was awarded the SAFE student of the month award for the month of November. SAFE is a program that focuses on seatbelt safety, preventing driver impairment and developing leadership in high school and middle school students. The program is sponsored by the Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office. Not only has Kaitlyn played a key part in the leadership of this program but she also has helped lead our RESIST efforts to promote tobacco and vape free healthier lifestyles, assisted with presentations in the elementary school Booster Rooster program, past DARE programs and other SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) activities. She has shown herself to be a strong, outspoken leader who even during our visit to the state capitol last year as part of the annual "Kick Butts Day" event stood up and spoke before lawmakers advocating lawmakers make changes to further assist in the fight against the tobacco and vape industry. As a sponsor it is great to have her leadership and the efforts she puts forth, as well as our other leaders, and I look forward to the rest of this year and the many other events we have planned.

Riverside Primary students raised a record $400 in change during our Pennies for Pajamas service project! We were able to purchase more than 70 pairs of pajamas which will be gifted to Kaden’s Kloset and used to address the needs of children in Doniphan County. THANK YOU to our families, friends, and staff who encourage our students to give to others and be contributing members of our Elwood and Wathena communities.

The purpose of this message is to provide an update regarding last week's issue with potential bed bugs. After our school district hired a licensed pest management company last week to treat three locations for potential bed bugs, no further evidence of bed bugs has been discovered. The only confirmed bed bugs were discovered at the Alternative School building in Elwood last Wednesday, and the location was treated that day. Please see the attached email document or Facebook for more information.

Riverside HS SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) members met with the Wathena City Council during their last open meeting on Monday November 18 to discuss the creation of a Tobacco and Nicotine Free Parks policy for the City. Jennifer Haynes, NEKES CDRR program coordinator, was present to help discuss the policy and its implementation. Riverside SADD consists of a group of 16 Riverside students who work with Kansas RESIST and Tobacco Free Kansas to help promote healthy lifestyle choices, cleaner air and environment for the schools and community by advocating against tobacco usage in any form, including vape, e-cigs, smokeless and smoking forms. We were excited to see where the city council vote positively for the creation of a policy against the use of tobacco around the city park and limiting its use to the parking lot areas. We believe this will provide a big step toward a much healthier and safer atmosphere for young and old to enjoy the city park.

Last Thursday the Riverside High School health science students had the chance to travel down to Kansas City and tour the Cerner World Headquarters and participate in activities that provided education on living healthy and making good choices in life. This was the culmination of a project our students participated in called Health-e Foundations. In this program students worked in groups with a fictional patient - analyzed their inpatient and outpatient treatment plans, assessed their lifestyle choices and managed their pharmaceutical and billing issues.

Last Wednesday, Mrs. Newton's Marketing and Accounting classes took a trip to the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City. They toured the money museum and learned how the Fed affects their everyday life. They then headed back to St. Joseph and toured Yellow Frog. There they learned about the different services Yellow Frog offers and the different careers that make it happen.

The Riverside SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) student organization is active in several areas this year, all aiming at helping their peers to make better informed and overall safer decisions in life. They have once again joined with larger state and national organizations such as Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office programs SAFE (Seatbelts Are For Everyone) and Booster to Belts promoting consistent and proper seat belt usage; Kansas RESIST (advocating against the use of tobacco and vape products), as well as SADD's own activities to promote drug and alcohol free lifestyles. This group has already received grants from these organizations to conduct training, attend conferences, do surveys and promote events and legislation in the communities of Wathena and Elwood and at the state level. A couple of those activities have already begun. The first of which is the seat belt survey backed by law enforcement where students observe vehicles entering into school parking lots and drop off locations and observe/record seat belt usage and driver distractions to be reported at the state level.
Members of SADD also have collected signed pledge cards from students at lunch and take monthly drawings for Casey's gift cards. The winners for the months of September and October were Delanie Hundley, Chase Walters, Morgan Miller and Charity Piveral. In addition to these drawings, banners were created for students to sign and be placed in the middle and high schools. Several other activities such as a poster contest for the elementary students, and "Vape Free Day" is in the works, and several of the student leaders will be attending the Kansas Teen Traffic Safety Conference in Topeka.
For more information on this group, the activities being planned, or if you would like to provide assistance in any way, please contact Jim Cera, group sponsor, at the high school.

The Riverside Cross Country runners finished off their season last week at Jackson Heights and Alma - Wabunsee. The Jackson Heights meet we have been going to for the last 2 decades and it has always been a great prep race for our regional meet at the high school level. It is also the last race for middle school runners. Carter Hewins, 8th grader, ran very well in the race placing 2nd in the race with a time of 13:23 for the longer than 2 mile course.
Hayden Daugherty placed 1st in the JV division and in the top 20 overall in his race at Jackson Heights Tuesday. On Saturday, we traveled to Alma for the Class 2 A regionals meet. It was a beautiful morning for a race and Hayden ran well, placing 41st with a time of 20:42, a large improvement in time over his freshman year.
Thank you to everyone who supported these runners. We look forward to track season and know there's a lot of off-season work to be done now to prepare.

Riverside’s Friday playoff football game against Southeast of Saline will be at Home in Wathena starting at 7:00 pm.

The 5th annual Riverside Drama Haunted House is tonight and Saturday. Guided tours begin tonight, Friday, October 25th, at Half-Time of the home football game. It reopens Saturday, October 26th at 7pm. The last tour will be at 10pm both nights. The cost is $5 per person.

Riverside Cross Country runners Laci Orcutt and Hayden Daugherty competed in the Big 7 League Cross Country Championships on Thursday at the Hiawatha Country Club. Although a bit windy, it was a beautiful day to run against some good competition. Laci's race was first and it was her first race back, coming off a patellar tendon injury. She competed very well until about 2 miles into the race and was unable to finish when her knee flared up again. It was a pretty difficult thing for her and myself as a coach, to have her work as hard as she does and love the sport as much as she does, just to have this injury happen and then recur.
Our male athlete, Hayden Daugherty, then competed in the combined jv/varsity race, placing in the top 30 varsity runners and 4th as a jv entry, earning himself a medal and running a new personal best. His time of 20:06 was a 2 minute improvement over our last race on this course back in September and almost a 45 second improvement overall this year. With 2 races left, he's doing very well this season and we hope to close things out well at Jackson Heights (Tuesday) and Alma on Saturday.

Riverside HOSA (Future Health Professionals, formerly Health Occupation Students of America) members attended the annual state fall conference held in Topeka Wednesday. It was a great time to learn about different professions, visit with colleges and recruiters and learn more about the competitive events being held at the spring conference. There were over 300 students and advisors in attendance along with state leaders and professionals from hospitals and treatment facilities around the state. It was a fun and informative time for these students who are planning to pursue health professions as a career. The conferences and HOSA are great assets to developing and implementing our health science curriculum and challenge the students to develop critical thinking skills as well as provide real life, hands-on situations for them to learn in.

Thursday Riverside XC runners Laci Orcutt and Hayden Daugherty competed in the Sabetha Invitational at the Sabetha Country Club. It was our first real cold day of the season with north winds dropping the temps to under 30 degrees wind chill and light rain. In spite of the conditions, both runners ran very well. It was Laci's first race of the season, just coming off of a knee injury. She ran well though, placing 6th in the JV division with a time of 26:02. Times were pretty slow due to the conditions but Hayden still managed to pull off a personal best in his race placing him in the top 10 JV and 51st in varsity among some of the top teams in the state. His time was 20:33 for the 5k course.
We have a little over 2 weeks to go in the season and are looking forward to continued improvements seeing all of their hard work pay off. We head to the Big 7 League meet at Hiawatha on Thursday at 4:00pm.

Riverside XC runners Carter Hewins (middle school) and Hayden Daugherty (high school) competed at Perry Lecompton Thursday. The location of the course was moved to Perry Lake State Park in Ozawkie due to flooding of the original course. This course was much better and more closely represented what would be considered a true cross country course with narrow trails, winding route, mud, hills and not on a golf course. It was a beautiful day to run as well and both athletes took advantage of the great competition. There were 16 schools at the meet from all over the state and ranging from 5A to 1A schools. Carter ran well, recording almost a minute personal best finishing the 2 mile race in 11:25 and Hayden fought some challenges in a large, tough field finishing just over 23 minutes (23:02) for the course. Overall it was a good day for these guys and we're looking forward to next race at Sabetha and potentially having Laci back to run with us.

Two of the Riverside XC athletes competed at the Nemaha Central Cross Country Invitational on Thursday at the Spring Hill Golf Course in Seneca. The weather finally gave us a break and both runners had the opportunity to compete against some strong competition on a beautiful day. Carter Hewins began the afternoon with the 8th grade 2 mile race. He ran well, earning a medal by placing 5th in the meet with a time of 12:39. Hayden Daugherty was next to run and did very well placing 21st in the varsity race, earning a medal with a time of 20:52.

Riverside High School and Middle School XC competed in their second meet of the season Thursday on a hot and humid day at Hiawatha Country Club. The times were slower than normal on the hilly golf course because of the weather, but we're still happy overall with the results. Compared to last year we still saw improvements and are looking forward to our next race at Nemaha Valley hopefully having both other runners back.

Concerts at school? Seems bizarre right? Well, at Riverside High School on Tuesday, August 3rd, there was a mini concert. Donphian West and Troy joined us in listening to the MVP Production! They gave a fantastic message in an entertaining way so that everyone listened. According to Isaac, “The message was heard through their music”. As all three singers shared their personal testament with a song, the crowd became mesmerized. Singing and rapping put a new perspective on a tough situation. Everyone was involved, clapping and jumping along with the music. Wanna listen to what Doniphan County schools witnessed? Give Nextera Music a try!

March 23, 2019
Dear Riverside USD 114 Community,
As I have said so many times, the towns of Elwood and Wathena are wonderful places to live and raise families. On behalf of Riverside USD 114 and the Board of Education, I would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped our school during the recent flood evacuation and relocation of students. Our school is very blessed to have such a supportive school community. Our district has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from parents, volunteers, the Cities of Elwood and Wathena, Elwood and Wathena Police Departments, Doniphan County Sheriff’s Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Elwood and Wathena fire departments, the Missouri Air National Guard, Doniphan County Emergency Management, Kansas Emergency Management, members of the Elwood Gladden Drainage District, our local businesses, and our local churches. It has been great to see so many people working together to battle the floodwaters to protect our community, specifically our East Campus in Elwood as well the homes and businesses of many of our families.
Please know that we are grateful to each and every one of you for supporting our students and staff during this time. Riverside has been privileged to work side by side with you in our school family. None of our students could accomplish great things without the assistance of all of us working together to relocate them and support them. We are hopeful that the threat of flooding in Elwood and east Wathena will be short-lived and we can resume our normal operation in the near future. If anyone encounters problems the school can help with, please contact our administration and we will work closely with you as partners to provide assistance. Over the past week, I have witnessed two towns come together as one community who cares about its members. Please know that you are greatly appreciated. Your support means so very much to the young people in our schools.
Warmest Regards,
Robert W. Blair, Superintendent
