The Cyclones 7th and 8th grade boys combined point total won them the Northeast Kansas League Championship this past Thursday at JCN. The scores were Riverside 212 to Pleasant Ridge at 169 then JCN with 144. The 8th grade boys also dominated the 8th grade division with a 63 point cushion to their nearest competitor, McLouth. Finishing out a stellar middle school career was Charles Hewins, who set or tied league records with performances in the long jump (20’1”), 100m (11.34), 400m (55.2 tie), and 200m (23.19). Those go with his records in the 7th grade 100m, 400m, and 200m. TJ McGee finished 1st in the triple jump and set a new record, for the first time held at league, in the 200m hurdles at 27.87. Our 4x200 relay team of McGee, Max Koehler, Brooks Griffin, and Daley Garland lowered the league record with a new time of 1:45.21. Griffin also placed first in the high jump. Garland added runner-up finishes in the shot, 100m, and 200m.
Oliver Cluck paced the 7th graders with four first place finishes in the high jump, 100m hurdles, 100m, and 200m. Lincoln Cluck finished 2nd in the 200m hurdles, as the team of Kaevan Harrington, Zayne Euler, Calvin Oyerly, and Bryston Cross came away with 3rd place in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Kaydence Roland set school records in the 100m (13.57) and 200m (28.72) while finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. She also anchored the team in the 4x10 and 4x200 relay for 3rd place along with Kinleigh Coleman, Aaliyah Perez, and Jasper Doolin. Abby Williams came away with a collection of medals as she won the 100m, came up short in 2nd in the long jump, and finished 3rd in the high jump.
The coaches were very proud of all of the participants this past Thursday. Many saw personal bests in the throws, jumps, and times, which at the end of the season, is really what we’re striving to achieve. This whole group was a hard-working team that we coaches loved being around daily. We look forward to working with our 7th graders next year in 8th grade and wish the 8th graders continued success as they move on to high school.
