Riverside SADD as part of their SAFE (Seatbelts Are For Everyone) campaign hosted a speaker from the Think First organization and invited students to try the Convincer crash simulator. Kelly Narowski from Think First spoke to the students about traumatic injuries and how to avoid them by doing simple things like wearing a seat belt, driving safe, sober, and without distractions, wearing bike and sports helmets and other safety precautions. Kelly's presentation was very impactful, speaking from first hand experience as a paraplegic from a car accident. After the presentation, students were invited to ask questions and then called by class to participate in the Convincer simulation. The Convincer is a sled with seatbelt designed to simulate what a person in crash at just 6-8 mph would experience. The riders are given quite a jolt and asked to consider the damage that a faster crash would cause and what would happen if they weren't buckled in.
A large part of Riverside SADD (SAFE) mission is to help educate and empower their peers to make wise and safe decisions when going through life, but especially when behind the wheel. Student leaders go through training every year and participate in many activities to help promote their message. You may see them conducting seat belt surveys, collecting pledge cards, teaching younger students about child seats and booster seats, putting up road signs or many other activities throughout the year.
We are very thankful to Trooper Jody Clary, the Kansas Traffic Resource Office, Wathena Police Chief Dennis Thompson and the Think First Organization for making this event and many others possible.

First Time Trip to Falls City Meet Equals Good Results for Riverside MS Track
Our middle school Cyclones took to Falls City, Nebraska for a five-team meet at a
phenomenal high school facility. Our athletes were impressed to see an eight-lane track
surrounding a colorful field turf football field encased within a decorative retaining wall. I
think this “small college feel” excited our kids, and their performances proved that. Many
members of the squad achieved personal records in their events, and some even got to try
different ones.
We were also restricted in the number of events each athlete could do as well as not
being able to bring all of our team with a few less events. Competition was tough within
two divisions of girls and boys with Hiawatha, Maryville, Falls City Sacred Heart, and Falls
City being in attendance. Our boys finished in second place just coming up short of
Hiawatha by 14.5 points. Our athlete’s results are below. We will be off to North Andrew
Thursday to compete against 15+ smaller Missouri districts.
