With a season best Long Jump of 15-7.5, a 9 ½ inch improvement, Sophie Juhl earned a 4th place finish as a freshman and punched her ticket to the State Track Meet. “I am so excited right now I can barely breathe,” Sophie said. She also jumped a personal best in the triple jump 32-7 which got her in to finals, but fell just short of placing. Sophie will be long jumping at 10:00 am at Wichita State University next Saturday Allison Schultz jumped extremely well in the high jump and came up one place short with a 5th place finish, since only the top 4 qualify for state. “It is always disappointing when athletes come so close, but don’t get to go on,” said Coach Koranda. “But she did her very best today and I am super proud of her.” Unfortunately the injury that has taunted Hayden Daugherty all season decided to rear its ugly head Friday. With an extremely fast opening lap of the 1600, he felt something give a little and as the race went on he could feel his calf tightening. He rested, iced, and taped it for the 3200 and fought to finish, but was unable to grab one of the top 4 spots in either event.

Holly Howlett, RHS Class of 2021, was selected as Riverside's recipient of the Kansas Governor's Scholar program. The Governor's Scholars program has honored the top academic one percent of Kansas high school seniors for the past 38 years. When Holly was notified as a recipient, she stated, 'It feels like my hard work has finally paid off, even though there aren't scholarships with the award. I plan to attend Mizzou for undergrad and then on through med school to become a psychiatrist.' Holly chose Mrs. Laura Benitz, RHS photo-art teacher as the 2021 Teacher of Influence. Mrs. Benitz is recognized for being an influential teacher, and the honor is bestowed by the scholar and recognized by the Governor of the State of Kansas. Mrs. Benitz stated, "I am honored to be chosen as the 2021 Teacher of Influence. I love being a teacher, and I feel passionate about making strong connections with each of my students. Holly is a remarkable young woman, and I know without a doubt she will achieve all her life's goals."
