The RHS track teams competed at the Big 7 Quad meet held at Jefferson West High School Thursday April 27. It was a really nice day for a track meet, one of the first we've had this year. Our athletes stepped up and did very well on both sides. Starting with the girls, Sophie Juhl ran personal bests in the 100m (13.64) and 200m (29.11) races, placing second in both events. She also placed 2nd in the long jump (13'10.5) and 4th (30'4) in the triple jump. Allison Schultz competed in 4 events, with a 5th place finish in the high jump at 3'8 and Emma Koranda also competed in 4 events (SP, DT, JT) and set a new personal best in the discus with a throw of 44'1". On the boys side, Christopher Brooke competed in the 100, 200, Long Jump and set a new personal best of 7'0" in the Pole Vault. Dylan Wertin competed in his second meet of the season setting personal bests in the 200 (27.71) and 70' 8" (DT), while also competing in the javelin and shot put. Finally junior Hayden Daugherty competed in the 1600 (5:39) and set personal bests in the 3200 (12:11) and High Jump (4'0). We will travel to Nemaha Central and Sabetha as our next two meets and look forward to some great competition and continued improvements. RHS Physics class is finishing off their year of learning with Estes' and the National Association of Rocketry's STEM rocketry unit. We took all we had learned in class about aerodynamics, friction, Newton's laws, engineering and astronomy and applied them to this hands-on unit. Each of the 5 students purchased, built and launched their own rockets and we discussed the peak altitude, maximum velocity and wind resistance after the launch. Riverside’s track team traveled to Effingham Tuesday, April 13th for the ACCHS Invitational track meet. The day was crisp with a chilly west wind, but the track members were just pleased to have the sun shining. The only placer on the day was Sophie Juhl in the long jump with 14 feet 3 inches that placed her fourth. It was her first time participating in that event. She also ran a personal best in the 100-meter dash with a 13.9. Her other events were the 200 – 30.5 and the triple jump – 28’ 5”. Allison Shultz tried a new event, high jump, and found herself happy by clearing opening height. “With more practice I know she can continue to improve and jump even higher next meet,” Coach Koranda said. Allison also long jumped 10’ 3” then ran personal best times in both the 100-meter dash - 16.8 and the 200-meter dash – 35.8. Emma Koranda, Riverside’s thrower, participated in the javelin – 49’ 10”, discus – 40’ 10’, and Shot – 17-10, which was a personal best for her in that event for the year. For the boys, Hayden Daugherty ran the 1600 meter run 5:40.8 and the 800 2:32.8, both personal records, despite dealing with some leg pain. Chris Brooke long jumped 11’ 3” then ran best times of the year for him in both 100 – 14.1 and the 200 – 29.4. Dylan Wertin in his first meet of the year threw all three implements: shot 26’ 7”, discus – 66’ 5.75”, and javelin – 83’ 1”. Riverside travels to Highland Thursday, May 22nd for the Doniphan West Track Meet hosted on Highland Community College’s new track.
