Holly Howlett, RHS Class of 2021, was selected as Riverside's recipient of the Kansas Governor's Scholar program. The Governor's Scholars program has honored the top academic one percent of Kansas high school seniors for the past 38 years. When Holly was notified as a recipient, she stated, 'It feels like my hard work has finally paid off, even though there aren't scholarships with the award. I plan to attend Mizzou for undergrad and then on through med school to become a psychiatrist.' Holly chose Mrs. Laura Benitz, RHS photo-art teacher as the 2021 Teacher of Influence. Mrs. Benitz is recognized for being an influential teacher, and the honor is bestowed by the scholar and recognized by the Governor of the State of Kansas. Mrs. Benitz stated, "I am honored to be chosen as the 2021 Teacher of Influence. I love being a teacher, and I feel passionate about making strong connections with each of my students. Holly is a remarkable young woman, and I know without a doubt she will achieve all her life's goals."

The Riverside track team traveled to Perry-Lecompton last Thursday for the Big 7 League Track Meet. The highlight of the day was a 2nd place finish in the Triple Jump with a leap of 32 feet 3 inches on her second attempt in finals. “All it takes is one good one, “ Coach Koranda said after Sophie improved from her 7th place seating coming in to the finals. Despite dealing with a nagging knee injury, Sophie also managed a 5th place finish in the 100-meter dash. Emma Koranda completed her track career with the Cyclones with three personal records in all three of her throwing events. Hayden Daugherty also ran a personal best in the 1600 meter run and Christopher Brooke jumped a personal best in the long jump. The regional track meet being held at Valley Heights High School in Blue Rapids next Friday is the next adventure for the track team. Athletes need to place in the top four at regionals to qualify for state being held in Wichita on Saturday, May 29th this year for 2-1A teams. Good luck to those going to regionals!

The National Honor Society Blood Drive, held on April 28, 2021, was a tremendous success. A big thank you to sponsors Laura Benitz and Steve Snider, and the NHS members for their hard work in organizing this event. To the Riverside students and community: Thank you for all you did to make the Riverside High School spring blood drive a resounding success. During this blood drive, 41 appointments were created and of that number, 35 were able to donate successfully. Thank you to the NHS members who recruited new and repeat donors, and managed the entire process in the school. This is the largest blood drive held at Riverside! Many of the donations were from student donors who will continue to donate throughout their lives. It is clear from this successful blood drive that Riverside students believe in the program, and community service in general. The Community Blood Center offers one scholarship each year to NHS college bound graduates when Riverside achieves their goal at each blood drive. Riverside NHS reached their goal with this blood drive, and will continue to strive for more in the coming years. Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE HELP AND SUPPORT OF SAVING LIVES!!!!

The RHS track teams competed at the Big 7 Quad meet held at Jefferson West High School Thursday April 27. It was a really nice day for a track meet, one of the first we've had this year. Our athletes stepped up and did very well on both sides. Starting with the girls, Sophie Juhl ran personal bests in the 100m (13.64) and 200m (29.11) races, placing second in both events. She also placed 2nd in the long jump (13'10.5) and 4th (30'4) in the triple jump. Allison Schultz competed in 4 events, with a 5th place finish in the high jump at 3'8 and Emma Koranda also competed in 4 events (SP, DT, JT) and set a new personal best in the discus with a throw of 44'1". On the boys side, Christopher Brooke competed in the 100, 200, Long Jump and set a new personal best of 7'0" in the Pole Vault. Dylan Wertin competed in his second meet of the season setting personal bests in the 200 (27.71) and 70' 8" (DT), while also competing in the javelin and shot put. Finally junior Hayden Daugherty competed in the 1600 (5:39) and set personal bests in the 3200 (12:11) and High Jump (4'0). We will travel to Nemaha Central and Sabetha as our next two meets and look forward to some great competition and continued improvements.
