Riverside Cross Country finished out their season last week with 2 meets. Jackson Heights, one of our favorite courses, was held Tuesday Oct 19 at their high school. It features rolling grasslands and a pretty neat tree tunnel as part of the course and usually tends to be one of the faster courses of the season. Hayden ran 20:10, his second fastest time of the year and earning a 12th place medal in the JV/V race. Freshman Cody Hewins also ran well on the coursen placing 26th and running 21:03. 7th grader Anthony Russell also ran, competing in the combined junior high race and placing 5th overall with a time of 14:45. It was his last race for the season for junior high athletes. Moving forward to Saturday and the Class 2A regional meet held at Richmond - Central Heights HS. Both Hayden and Cody ran in this race against the best of the region to try and earn a place at the state meet. This was also Hayden's last race as a high school XC athlete. The rolling hills and cooler weather helped provide good conditions for great competition. Cody came across the finish line with a time of 20:53 and Hayden followed closely as the next runner with a time of 21:03. Neither were able to qualify for the state meet but I am still very glad to have coached them and proud of their hard work and accomplishments. I am thankful to have been able to spend 4 years coaching Hayden in Cross Country; for his great attitude, willingness to work hard and learn, and his competitive nature, and I look forward to spring track season as he wraps up his senior year. As for Cody, I am looking forward to hopefully bringing some more runners on board for next year for XC and also being able to coach him in track. Best luck to Anthony as well in his first track season as a junior high athlete! Finally, thank you to Mr. Roach and Coach Koranda for their support at our meets this year. Pictures: 1. Officers from the Doniphan County Sheriff’s Office and the Wathena Police Department visited Riverside Primary to inform and instruct students what to do in the event of an intruder following the ALICE method. We learned 3 steps to remember: 1. Get away 2. Scream 3. Run in a zig zag pattern Students are also encouraged to learn their phone number and address in case of an emergency at school, at home, or even at the grocery store.
