Riverside HS Class Studies Physics of Race Cars
The RHS Physics Class designed and built miniature race cars for a quarterly project recently. It was a great opportunity to study several different concepts of physical science such as: velocity and acceleration, friction, aerodynamics, engineering (construction and design) and experimental error. The cars were built from derby car blocks of wood, wheels and axles and the students were challenged to build the fastest realistic cars to be propelled by rockets down a 115' hallway attached to a line for safety. After 1.5 weeks of designing and building , the students raced their cars one by one propelled by CO2 cartridges. The times for 115 feet ranged from 2.1 s to 3.8 s. The students discussed reasons for the range and calculated speeds in mph, m/s and km/hr. The top speed reached by one of the cars was 36.9mph! We will continue to do hands-on practical projects like these throughout the year and will share them as we do.
